2007-2008 in Review

1. On September 24, 2007, the remodeling of Hinson campus center and forum, reconstructed under measures E and C, ended.

2. On March 3, 2007, a girl alleged she was raped at a party held at the home of a De Anza College baseball player. However, due to insufficient evidence, according to Attorney Dolores Carr and Attorney General’s Office, did not press charges after more than 1,000 hours of investigation on May 5, 2008.

3. The Design of Performing Arts Center began its construction last Monday. (October 8, 2007)

Norma Cantu, an award-winning author and professor at the University of Texas, visited De Anza College on October 1, 2008 to give a series of talks to students and the public.

A nobel nominee Al Gore visited De Anza College, made a speech, and applauded Kirsch center’s new platinum environmental rating. (October 8, 2007 – last Monday night)

6. An award-winning journalist Joe Galloway spoke about his movie, war, and politics to De Anza students on October 18, 2007.

7. De Anza college received bomb and other threats by phone and post-it notes on October 1 and October 18, 2007.

8. De Anza was restricted funds from being used for renovation projects and therefore filed a lawsuit by Aaron Katz and Melvin Emerich on the Measure (a measure that would provide $490.8 million in bond money for district projects). (November 15, 2007) However, measure C funds were secured on December 12, and the windfall for measure C funds were released after 19 months.

9. An international author Manju Jaidka discussed gender roles in the book “The Bamesake” by visiting De Anza College on November 20.

11. The library decided to require a DASB (ID) card from students . (January 16, 2008)

12. A well-known film producer Gary Goldstein taught a master class as a part of De Anza College’s visiting artists lecture series on February 23.

Roughly 2,200 students from California community colleges, including De Anza College, marched on the steps of the state capitol to protest against the governor’s proposed budget cuts. (April 28, 08)
