Be Fit @ College
Scoff at the Freshman 15 by exercising and eating healthy

by Jen Welsh

The transition between high school and college is a big change as you move away from your parents and make new friends. Along with these changes come changes in your eating and exercise habits. Increased study time and longer extra-curricular hours decrease homemade meals. Harder classes and tougher schedules mean more time studying and less time exercising.
Because all of these changes hit you at once the impact is harder to deal with, but with a little effort you can stop lifestyle changes from effecting your health, and scoff at the freshman 15.
One of the hardest things is changing your habits and routines to fit your new schedule and lifestyle, and making time to continue to eat well and exercise. One of the easiest ways to make time for exercise is to build it into your schedule by taking a physical education class or joining an active club.
PE classes are graded just like any other, so failing to go and participate will hurt your G.P.A. which will give you that extra push to attend. If you sign up for the class or club with a friend, you can push each other to keep up.
Other things you can do with your De Anza peers are join a fitness or activity club. The Outdoors Club sponsors expeditions, for only a 15$ dues every year. Activities range from surfing to hiking and backpacking to ocean kayaking.
De Anza College offers many ways to stay fit and healthy from taking fitness and sports classes to joining a school athletic team.
There are over 70 activity courses and 18 men’s and women’s athletic teams available for students to participate in here on campus. Classes range from one-half to two units and are offered Monday through Friday between 5:30 a.m. and 10 p.m. and are open to every student registered at De Anza.
De Anza has a new soccer field, tennis courts, softball field, golf area, and archery area. Field space includes facilities for baseball, softball, archery, soccer, football, golf, track and field, walking and jogging.
